Piloting ships like Poe Dameron’s X-Wing or the Millennium Falcon felt a lot more special when I was given the freedom to fight as I saw fit. These sections were reminiscent of the Rogue Squadron games, albeit on a smaller scale, yet their simplistic fun reminded me that it was high time for a really good Star Fox game. Force Awakens opens this mechanic up by providing the same linear, shoot as much and collect all you can segments, but also allowing them to open up into fully fleshed out dogfights, like those you’d expect from Star Wars Battlefront. Flight is nothing new to the LEGO series, with previous Star Wars games, Batman, Marvel, and others providing quick arcade sections that put you on a linear blasting path, or set up a side scrolling shooter such as in LEGO Marvel’s Avengers. Probably the biggest addition to the gameplay are the aerial battles. I also loved the fact that this new feature wasn’t overused, an issue that plagues many franchises that try to switch things up. The addition of interactive elements helps to keep them from feeling bland as well, providing the option to use explosions, exploit weakness in giant robots, or build new advantages. Poking your head out to steal headshots, build combos, and pick off waves of enemies is a fun diversion. The first taste of something fresh came in the form of Blaster Battles, which are these cover-based shooter segments. There you are, fighting with your lightsaber and using your special abilities, all the while smashing blocks and collecting thousands of Studs, but after that brief tutorial that ushers you in with welcome arms, the new elements start to seep in from all sides. When it begins, it feels like your classic LEGO experience. That excitement was only furthered by the gameplay, the very core of any video game experience. I never expected to learn even more about the expanding Star Wars universe in a LEGO game, but these extra peeks behind the veil helped to make the act of playing through a movie I’ve already seen multiple times even more exciting. What’s different about The Force Awakens, however, is that the ones on display here build directly onto the film, offering more insight into the story by showing events from directly before the film, and off-screen moments. Like all LEGO games before it, it adds onto the story with fun side quests. It did so by being more than its predecessors.Īs you could tell by the title, this latest release covers the recent blockbuster film of the same name. LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens didn’t help me realize this by compounding my new revelation, though. (No, it wasn’t that the Force is potentially real.) It made me realize that the LEGO games, while very fun, have played it relatively safe throughout the dozens of games released under the banner. LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens immediately opened my eyes to one thing.

Gisele Bündchen catches a football before the start of NFL action between the New England Patriots and the New York Jets. So what’s your flavor: tuned expertise (Patriots) or eye-popping athleticism (Falcons)? Choose accordingly. Ryan will likely win MVP, and his favorite target, Julio Jones, is faster and stronger than every other receiver alive. They scored more points than any other team and filleted the Green Bay defense in the NFC title game. The Falcons, on the other hand, are a fireworks show made entirely of the grand finale. Brady moves the Patriots down the field in eight-yard increments, putting dozens of short throws in inch-perfect locations. New England is a study in football nuance, with intricate receiving patterns, a defense that allowed the fewest points all season, and a well-drilled special teams unit. Maybe you’re a purist who believes the true joy of the Super Bowl lies in watching two great teams compete at the highest level of the sport, and everything else-the commercials, the halftime show, the backstories-is just noise. Otherwise, go with the Falcons.Ītlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones (11) runs past Seattle Seahawks free safety Steven Terrell (23) during the first half of an NFL game in Atlanta. If you were celebrating on November 8, you may prefer to double-down with the “winners” and “great champions,” as the president refers to them, from New England. But for what it’s worth, Atlanta as a city mostly voted blue (though Georgia as a whole went red). The allegiances of quarterback Matt Ryan and the head coach Dan Quinn are unknown, and even owner Arthur Blank is connected to the election only by way of his Home Depot co-founder Bernard Marcus, who endorsed Trump. The Falcons, meanwhile, have been quiet on the political front. Though Massachusetts went blue on election day, the Patriots’ key figures are likely happy with the outcome. Your leadership is amazing.” At a dinner the night before the inauguration, Trump wished good luck to the Patriots owner Robert Kraft in the AFC Championship game. You’ve proved to be the ultimate competitor and fighter. Though he has since done his best to change the subject when it’s come up, he calls President Trump “a good friend.” The Patriots coach Bill Belichick sent Trump a letter at the tail end of the campaign, writing, “You have dealt with an unbelievable slanted and negative media and have come out beautifully. Along with Tales from the Crypt and The Haunt of Fear, it formed a trifecta of popular EC horror anthologies. A multilayered soundscape including creepy period music and carefully engineered sound effects (footsteps that advance ominously out of the darkness, screams that echo in an abandoned house) contributes to the unsettling atmosphere that marks each tale. The Vault of Horror was an American bi-monthly horror comic anthology series published by EC Comics in the early 1950s. The cast features Phil Proctor, Denise Poirier, and an outstanding performance by Kevin Grevioux as the Vault Keeper, whose rumbling voice and wicked laugh nearly steals the show. You will note that the Pope also made specific reference to Lauds, Vespers and Compline - Morning, Evening and Night Prayer. Our relationship with God can only be enriched by our journeying towards Him day after day I would like to renew my call to everyone to pray the Psalms, to become accustomed to using the Liturgy of the Hours, Lauds, Vespers, and Compline. This is not the case - and in point of fact I wouldn't recommend it for laity (unless you are home-bound or retired).Īs for this other idea that the Office is too clerical, that certainly isn't what the Church says or thinks and in 2011 Pope Benedict XVI offered his own reflection on this at a Wednesday general audience: Of course the other mistake that often influences this idea that the Divine Office is "too long" is the misunderstanding that if one is going to pray the Divine Office one needs to pray all of the hours. On average I would estimate that a prayerful reading of the Office, one that is said neither too rapidly nor slowly in other words, will probably you see invest 10-15 minutes for each of the major hours of Lauds and Vespers for example - and approximately 10 minutes for Compline (understanding, of course, that when one is first learning something, it always takes a bit longer than it normally will otherwise). With regard to this objection let me state categorically and unequivocally that it is misplaced and a myth. By adopting this worthy practice you are allowing yourself not only to be imbued with the richness of the psalms and sacred scripture, you are also being formed liturgically, following the liturgical calendar and seasons of the Church more closely and allowing the liturgical prayer of the Church to penetrate and form your day, each and every day, and not solely on Sundays.Īt the same time, however, there can also be a reservation expressed by some who feel that the Divine Office is simply too much work, too time consuming, too 'clerical' or 'monastic' for the laity the pursue and so (the thinking goes) the laity should just stick with other devotions and not trouble themselves with the breviary. This is very encouraging for in terms of the various forms of prayer that one might undertake, the Divine Office should rank very high as a primary consideration - it, after all, forms a part of the Church's liturgical prayer and is a source of very great comfort and liturgical formation. Usually going hand in hand with this is a series of questions about how one can go about praying it. The subject of the Divine Office is one that I like to raise from time to time and it often brings with it a swell of interest and curiosity. By keeping that scope limited, Death’s Door is able to present players with a beautifully-crafted and interconnected world, and intentionally-designed combat encounters to boot, without overwhelming them at any point. Enemy designs are largely reused, but elaborated on, elevated as the game progresses. It only has a few locations, but they are made very well, both in terms of art direction and in design. Overtakenĭeath’s Door is defined most strongly in three ways: its scope, its gameplay, and its tone.īy way of scope, Death’s Door excels by keeping it focused. Its inspirations are strong, but they only serve as part of the foundation. It might not seem like it, with the giant, Soulsian bosses and enemies it throws at you, but it encourages you through every defeat: every enemy can be overcome, every attack learned from, every challenge an opportunity to grow and improve. It wants you to succeed, it encourages you to try, and try again. Death’s Door is difficult, and it will lay you out any number of times, but it’s not defeatist. Every fight, you get a little further, you learn a little more, you chunk a little more damage into the big boss, you advance. Death’s Door is not punishing, it is encouraging. If an inciting incident ain’t broke, no need to fix it!īut as quickly as players fall, they are brought back again, where Dark Souls excels the most. The game kicks off proper with a familiar trope to any Zelda fan: we need to find a few very important items to complete our quest. Inspirationĭeath’s Door looks, and feels, similar to the older Legend of Zelda titles: a top-down perspective, sword-based combat, all that good stuff. Great fun for everyone, more on that later. The short version of Death’s Door is this: players control a Crow, a contracted Reaper, in their journey and battles to reap their assigned soul. It is an experience flavored by those that came before it, while finding unexpected and wonderful ways to overtake its own inspirations. For a smaller, intimate experience than its inspirations, it makes the daunting feel manageable the insurmountable, accessible the inevitable, comforting. Hookshot across the gap and head to the left to find the Nightmare door. But by the second, the third day of play, Death’s Door truly came into focus. Spend a small key at the lock-block that is in the way as you emerge into the next room. In Death’s Door, you collect different abilities as you complete various areas in the game. Most of my notes from that first day were inspiration-based: parallels and similarities to the standards set by Dark Souls and The Legend of Zelda. By the end of my first session, I was already scrawling notes down, both what I was experiencing and what I wanted to revisit in the game (more on that later). I went into Death’s Door thinking I could just play it and (hopefully) enjoy it. Other desperate claws at terrible wordplay grasped at my mind the last few days.
